Summer in Oregon is the best. The weather is great (except for the heatwaves), activities are endless, and we get a nice break from the rain. The little ones are also on a whole other level of excitement because school is out. Bike rides, sporting events, and so much more turn these few months into a memorable playground for them.

Oregon summers are pure magic. Hiking through the misty Cascade trails, kayaking the Deschutes, and hanging out at our one-of-a-kind beaches are just a small part of everything Oregon has to offer. From festivals to local fresh farm stands, there are so many options for families to take part in together, too. As a parent, I try never to forget the excitement I felt as a child every year the summer approached. And while summertime is the perfect season to encourage independent adventure and maybe a little bit more freedom than during the school year, scheduling in some activities on the calendar is also worthwhile.

THPRD (Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District) has a long list of summer events perfect for the entire family. On Thursday, June 25th, they are hosting their Summer Kickoff Concert & Celebration from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Mt. View Champions Park. The event is totally free and will have live music, yard games, face painting, and more. And make sure your little ones bring their bicycles because there will be a Bike Rodeo. This activity includes a bike skills course, free helmet fittings, and mechanic tune-ups for their bicycles.

For families wanting to celebrate the 4th of July during the daytime, THPRD is hosting its 4th of July Celebration & Concert from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Veteran’s Memorial Park. The event is free and family-friendly, and it is recommended that you bring your own lawn chairs to set up your spot for the day. This is a great option for families who may not have any plans for the daytime on the 4th of July but still want to get out and spend time with other members of their community.

One of the funniest names for an event I have ever heard, the Hot Dog Wednesdays | Parks & Rec Month – The Power of Community, is happening on Wednesday, 7/15, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Cedar Hills Recreation Center. The event is free, and there will be food for purchase. The theme for this year is the power of community, which I think is beautiful and important to focus on. Activities will include a water slide, an obstacle course, a foam cannon, and much more.

On Saturday, August 15th, from 9:00am to 1:00pm, THPRD is hosting its Tri Together Triathlon. This race is intended for beginners and people of all ages. It is not a timed race and is meant only as fun entertainment for everyone. It will be held at the H.M. Terpenning Recreation Complex on Walker Road in Beaverton. The cost to take part in the race is $15 per in-district individual, or $55 for an entire in-district family. Out-of-district individuals and families are more than welcome to attend, but the cost is slightly higher.

THPRD is hosting many more events this summer that are worth checking out and can be found on their website. For my family and me, summer is the perfect season to get as much quality family time as we can. But quality family time can be done in a bunch of different ways. Sometimes it is having a lazy day around the house, sometimes it is taking a nice vacation, and other times it is taking part in an event in your local community. What ultimately matters is that time is being spent with one another.

Oregon families thrive when they prioritize quality time together during these summer months. The mild, sunny days that stretch long into the evenings offer the perfect backdrop for disconnecting from everyone’s busy schedules and reconnecting. Sharing adventures and activities also strengthens bonds, creates lasting memories, and fosters communication.

These experiences cultivate a sense of belonging and security without the demands of the school year.

The fun in Oregon is also endless. Our state’s natural playground encourages teamwork, laughter, and discovery while building an appreciation for the environment. The summer events happening this year at THPRD certainly reflect this sentiment.

In our fast-paced world, these intentional summer moments combat isolation, boost emotional well-being, and create traditions that families will cherish for generations. Investing in togetherness during Oregon’s magical summers yields joy today and stronger relationships tomorrow.
