Despite the first Twilight book coming out more than 20 years ago, and the first film approaching the two-decade mark, the series remains incredibly popular. Full Disclosure: I’ve never read the books, and I’ve only seen the first movie. But even though I’m out of the loop compared to others, I cannot deny the influence it’s had on the Pacific Northwest. Twilight is now officially a beloved series that people from different generations enjoy. Because of this, I have compiled a list of Twilight-based locations that even people like me, who don’t know much about the series, will still greatly enjoy.
Sayang’s Coffee:
Located in Beaverton, this coffee shop has a thoughtful menu with delicious, Twilight-themed drinks. This week, for example, they are offering a Twilight Flight, along with many other wonderful concoctions. Other drinks include their Wolf Pack, which is a cocoa puff latte. Jacob’s Campfire is their toasted marshmallow Matcha. And also their Edward’s Blood Moon, made with coconut Red Bull, strawberry puree, and whipped cream. Not to mention, their cups are aesthetically pleasing and Twilight-themed.
I had the pleasure of chatting with the owner of Sayang Coffee, and she explained that they always offer a variety of drinks you usually can’t find at other coffee shops. Their drinks are carefully crafted, and her business model focuses on building community with her customers. In fact, this is what she loves most about being a business owner. Creating connections over shared interests in handcrafted drinks and things like being nostalgic for Twilight is what builds this. She also said that because they are a small, local business, they make every drink and dessert with love. So, whether you are Twilight’s biggest fan or need a caffeine pick-me-up, take your family out to Sayang’s Coffee.
Bella’s House:
Although the story is primarily set in Forks, Washington, much of the filming took place in Oregon. As for Bella Swan’s house, not only is the house located in St. Helens, but it is also available to rent for an overnight stay. The house has been mostly preserved from the film, and additional Twilight-themed décor has been added to enhance the experience. I should also mention that the home is beautiful and located in a quiet area. This is a perfect place to rent for a few nights if you and the family need a place to stay in the St. Helens area. It also works great if you are just looking for a nice trip close to home.
Downtown St. Helens:
So, you booked Bella’s House. Now what? Well, quite a bit of filming took place in St. Helens, so you should make the most of the town you are staying in. You can check out the prom dress shop, the parking lot where Edward heroically stopped a van, the exterior of the Port Angeles Book Shop, the infamous alleyway scene, and even where the Bloated Toad staging took place. You can also take the family to watch a movie at The Columbia Theatre, the same movie theatre Bella went to with Jacob and Mike.
Nature Parks:
Maybe your family is catching on to these Twilight-based outings. Or maybe they have no idea. But a more solid option is to take them to Oxbow Park, where the famous “Say it out loud” line was spoken. Or maybe trek through Silver Falls State Park, where Edward’s opening deer hunt and forest acrobatics with Bella took place. There is also Multnomah Falls, which you can see in the backdrop to the truly awesome baseball sequence from the first film.
Honorable Mentions-
Vernonia:
I love Vernonia. Several generations ago, my family lived there, so this little town will always hold a special place in my heart. And also, yes, Twilight was filmed there; specifically, the Forks Police Station, which in real life is the Wauna Federal Credit Union building. If you and the family are heading out for a fun beach trip, maybe take a short detour to Vernonia to see it. It’s a beautiful drive at the very least.
Damascus:
The Carver Café located in Damascus is a real roadside diner you can grab a bite to eat at. This is where Bella and her father, Charlie, filmed their diner scenes. Everyone needs to eat, right? Might as well take the family out for some burgers and fries.
As a writer, I try to avoid clichés, and as I put this column together, I told myself I wouldn’t ask the question. But honestly, I feel compelled to ask it. So, which side are you on? Team Jacob or Team Edward?
