The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) announced the launch of The Mezz, a newly reimagined space designed for teens to explore, create, and connect. A refresh of OMSI’s teen center, The Mezz reflects a renewed vision for engaging young people in hands-on STEAM experiences while supporting OMSI’s broader goals around Career Discovery and Pathways initiatives.
“The Mezz is more than a name change, it’s an expansion and an invitation to teens and emerging adults who are excited to explore their ideas and bring them to life through tangible action,” said Alexis Baghdadi, OMSI Director of Campus and Museum Engagement.
“Inspired by the concept of a mezzanine, an in-between or transitional space, the name reflects the pivotal stage many teens are navigating as they explore interests, identity, and future pathways. Our tagline, Where Ideas Level Up, signifies what we’re trying to create – a space where teens feel ownership, where their ideas matter, and where they can begin to see themselves in future careers.”
The Mezz is a dedicated space for youth ages 13–18 where teens can experiment with technology, collaborate with peers and mentors, and level up their ideas. The new name signals an evolution, however; one that will expand to young adults in emerging stages of their careers. OMSI’s incipient Career Discovery and Pathways programming will encompass a wide range of STEAM experiences that will help prepare young people with the skills they need to meet today’s rapidly evolving workforce.
The new name emerged from a three-month collaborative process involving teens, community partners, and OMSI staff. At its core, The Mezz continues OMSI’s commitment to providing a safe, welcoming environment where teens and young adults can develop skills, build confidence, and engage with mentors. From digital media and fabrication to coding and design, the space offers opportunities for discovery that connect directly to real-world careers.
The Mezz is located within OMSI’s Water Avenue museum on the Mezzanine level of the Turbine Hall. The space is strictly limited to guests ages 13-18, and admission is free for teens.
