Northwest Children’s Theater is bringing back its imaginative hit Alice in Wonderland: A Jazz Musical, running March 28–April 19 at The Judy in downtown Portland, and one of the show’s biggest draws is that a live four-piece jazz band performs on stage throughout the production.
Conceived and composed by Portland jazz pianist Ezra Weiss and based on the classic book by Lewis Carroll, the musical blends Wonderland’s playful absurdity with the spontaneity and swing of live jazz, creating a rare opportunity for parents and kids to experience Portland’s professional jazz musicians together.
Many of the characters draw inspiration from legendary jazz artists: the Caterpillar channels Miles Davis on trumpet, the March Hare’s music nods to avant-garde saxophonist Ornette Coleman, and the Mad Hatter takes cues from piano innovator Thelonious Monk. The result is a show that introduces young audiences to jazz styles and personalities in a fun, imaginative way.
Leading the cast is favorite local jazz vocalist Marilyn T. Keller as the Queen of Hearts. She shares the stage with a live band made up of some of Portland’s most beloved musicians: pianist Charlie Brown, bassist Patrick Goličnik, drummer Tyson Stubelek, and saxophonist Mary-Sue Tobin.
For kids who may never have experienced live jazz before, the show offers an accessible and entertaining introduction to the sound, energy, and improvisation of the music—performed right in front of them by professional musicians. It’s a rare chance for parents who love jazz to share it with their children in a setting designed for young audiences, while still showcasing the artistry of Portland’s jazz community.
Alice in Wonderland: A Jazz Musical runs March 28–April 19 at The Judy in downtown Portland, with performances at noon and 3 p.m. A sensory-friendly performance will take place on March 29 at 3 p.m., and an ASL-interpreted performance is scheduled for March 29 at noon.
