The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) opened Orcas: Our Shared Future in May of 2023. If you haven’t gotten a chance to take your kids, you’re in luck! This startling and fascinating exhibit will remain open until January 28th, 2024.
Featuring fossils, replicas, and interactive maps, the exhibit is well worth a visit. Much of its subject is dedicated to orcas’ sharp minds and social structures. Children will be able to learn about the different types of orcas (Transient, Resident, and Offshore), and what distinguishes each. They can also view interactive maps of where orcas are found, and learn about the Pacific Northwest’s Northern and Southern Resident Orcas. Kids can even view life-size orca replicas to get an idea of the apex predators’ astonishing size!
Our Shared Future also showcases orcas as depicted in art and pop culture. The exhibit features original works of art made by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, displaying the reverence and respect many have held for orcas. The latter portion of the exhibit explores orcas in pop culture. Visitors will get a chance to view films and archival artifacts (from T-shirts to movie posters). See just how much pop culture’s perception has changed thanks to new research, advocacy work, and a deeper understanding of humans’ impact.
Orcas: Our Shared Future offers a unique and interactive opportunity for kids to learn about these extraordinary beings. Tickets to the special exhibition are included as a part of general admission. Those looking to save can visit OMSI for the price of just $5 dollars per person this Sunday, October 1st. Learn more about OMSI’s $5 dollar days on the first Sunday of every month here.
