With the return of long, dark Oregon evenings, it can get a bit tricky to come up with new or interesting indoor entertainment. Is that amazing show you were all binge-watching finished? Has your family grown tired of the games in your cupboard and found the repetitive nights cooped up at home a bit boring? Remember that fall and winter are the perfect seasons to cozy up with some live entertainment, thanks to your local theatre. Rainstorms and dark, chilly weather have no effect on the life and warmth found on stage! Throughout the state, we can find many unique performances at all sorts of different showtimes, and we will take a look at a few of them in more detail below. From newbies to regulars, I am positive this diversely creative state has a show of interest for us all!

Helpful Hints to Find Shows Near You

Check with local high schools or universities, as their theatre departments can feature a handful of new shows throughout the school year. The ticket prices typically match their lower-budget productions, so this can be a financially friendly option for all households. It is always a fantastic idea to spend your money supporting nearby students. Their passion, youth, and energy often make for exciting characters with resourceful and impressive sets! Taking your children to shows at a learning center within your own community gives them the opportunity to be inspired, see their own friends in action, and makes acting seem more accessible in their own future.

Locate a city near you with a public theatre, such as Salem’s Elsinore or Pentacle. Even smaller cities can surprise you with their vibrant productions, just like the Keizer Homegrown Theatre or Theatre West of Lincoln City. These shows are put together by everyday citizens with an exceptional interest in bringing stage characters to life for your pleasure, and most of them have modernized to include websites with online box offices that make finding the right show a breeze. While schools typically only run their shows for one or two weekends, public city theatres often feature shows for a month or longer, making scheduling a visit much more flexible. Most of these theatres will also offer membership specials, which can create an opportunity to see a maximum number of shows for a minimum impact on your wallet!

Watch for flyers and volunteer postings in local shop windows or pinned on your favorite coffeehouse corkboard. “The more the merrier” holds true for plays, and those people with the ideas are always seeking those with the time and effort to make dreams become a reality! Smaller theatre productions lean heavily on community support, so there will often be posters with helpful information near high-traffic areas. If your busy schedule cannot handle another time commitment currently, consider spreading the news about local events and needs with those around you as you go about daily life. Word of mouth is a powerful force for smaller creative works, and happy volunteers can make a major impact!

Encouraging Creativity Outside of the Theatre

It is easy to bring the fun of theatre home with us! While many of us are not comfortable standing on stage in front of hundreds of people, it is just as important to nurture our imagination and skills in originality and problem-solving, just in a smaller, more relaxed setting. If you need to shake up the routines in your house and add in some laughter and bonding time, consider trying out some classic at-home drama games, such as “Hot Seat,” which has one player assume the role of a celebrity, historical figure, or fictional character while the rest of the group acts like reporters, interviewing the player in the hot seat until someone can accurately name who they are pretending to be. As always, remember to keep creative games lighthearted and nonjudgmental. Goofy is great, and inclusiveness is best!
