Portland’s favorite groovy feline is back! After a near-sell-out run last year, Northwest Children’s Theater (NWCT) is bringing Pete the Cat — the live rock musical based on the beloved book series — back to The Judy Kafoury Center for Youth Arts from January 31 through February 15, 2026.

This vibrant stage production celebrates everything kids and families have loved about the books: playful energy, imaginative adventures, and catchy rock-inspired tunes that get toes tapping and imaginations soaring. The story follows laid-back, ever-cool Pete as he moves in with the Biddle family and befriends young Jimmy — a super-organized second grader struggling to unlock his creative spark. Through music, friendship, and unexpected fun, Pete helps Jimmy tap into his imagination and discover that art — like life — is about enjoying the journey.

Directed by NWCT Artistic Director Sarah Jane Hardy, this encore production brings back the original cast and features high-energy performances that keep the show moving at a pace perfect for young audiences. Showtimes are Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the production runs approximately one hour with no intermission — ideal for kids ages 4 and up.

NWCT is also offering special performances to make the theater even more accessible to Portland families:

  • A sensory-friendly show on Sunday, February 1 at 2 p.m., with adjusted lighting and sound for audience members who benefit from a gentler environment.
  • An ASL-interpreted performance on Sunday, February 8, at 11 a.m.

Tickets range from $25–$35, with $5 Arts for All tickets available for Oregon Trail SNAP Card holders. School matinees are also part of the run, welcoming thousands of students to experience live theater.

For families looking to spark young imaginations this winter — and introduce the next generation to the magic of live performance — Pete the Cat promises laughter, heart, and a rock-inspired good time. Visit nwcts.org to reserve seats and learn about group and school pricing.
