It’s getting dark outside around 4 pm these days, and maybe even earlier depending on the day, which means we’ve reached the time of year to bundle up the kids and find some fun wintery activities like looking at lights, cutting down trees, and sipping hot cocoa while you sing off-key carols. It may sound corny, but that’s a lot of what being a parent is. You turned in your “cool” card a long time ago in exchange for 80’s movies, 90’s songs, and comfortable clothes that aren’t skin tight. You aren’t up on the lingo; a night in with friends and a glass of mulled wine is just fine, and you’ll gladly wear sweats over something trendy if you have to choose.
Most holiday-inspired activities were off-limits or closed the last couple of years, but this year a lot of local events are happening and are going all out.
Here are my top five suggestions for a holiday-themed outing, and since the weather turns on a dime around here, you will want to bring rain gear just in case.
ZooLights –
The Oregon Zoo is a great experience for all ages year-round, but in December, they sure know how to go all out for an end-of-the-year holiday bash. They string lights and decorations all over the property, making it memorable yearly. During Covid in 2020, they pivoted to a drive-through option, and when it stayed popular last year, they decided to bring it back this year, and let’s hope it’s a permanent alternative. You can still buy tickets to walk the park most evenings, but for select nights they close the park to cars only. It’s a great time and a lot of fun, so if you like the zoo and you like lights, this is a can’t miss.

Holidays at the Belle
Previously known as the “miracle of a million lights,” the Victorian Belle opens their property to the public during the weeks leading up to winter for families to experience a one-of-a-kind holiday treat. With fun decorations and sights covering all 25 acres of their property, access to the mansion itself, and most of the grounds, there is something here for everyone. They do have some private events occasionally, so make sure to check their calendar before choosing a date to visit.

Christmas Ship Parade
One of the most beloved holiday events in the Portland area and one of few you can experience for no admission cost – you will just need to find one of many great viewing locations. Helping the community enjoy the holidays since 1954, the fleet is celebrating its 68th year, bringing festive lights to all ages on the rivers near Portland. They have dates scheduled for spots on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, so check that they will be spotted near you on the appropriate evening.

Pittock Mansion
If you want to treat the kids to more than one mansion tour this holiday season, you definitely need to include the Pittock Mansion in your plans. This year they will decorate the mansion and grounds with festive sights, and a music-themed exhibit. It’s a really neat property to visit all year, but it looks magical wrapped in holiday cheer.

Clackamas Winter Fair & Holiday Market
Live music, meeting Santa Claus, and getting your hot cocoa and some holiday shopping done all in one spot? If it sounds too good to be true, just remember that “believing is seeing.” Previously the fair was just that, but this year they are launching their first annual holiday market featuring more than 25 vendors. With more than enough lights and sights for kids and adults of all ages, and not nearly enough winter fairs out there anymore, you could do far worse than a cup of cocoa and a bag of caramel corn under the stars this holiday season.

Casey Mabbott is a husband and parent first, and also an experienced and dedicated writer and researcher. Born and raised in the Portland area, when Casey is not spending time with his family gallivanting around Portland and the surrounding areas, he genuinely enjoys helping people (especially families) find the “hidden gems” in the Pacific Northwest. In today’s world of lightning fast information at our fingertips, it’s truly a wonder to stumble across a place, an experience, or an activity you’ve never heard of.
