Have you ever been rock climbing? If not, you probably haven’t taken your little ones, and that’s a shame. Rock climbing helps children develop physical and mental strength, trust, and confidence, making it an excellent hobby for fostering critical thinking and enhancing problem-solving skills. It also develops hand-eye coordination and serves as a way to stave off boredom. It’s a win-win! So, let’s climb some walls and have fun!

The Circuit Bouldering Gym

The Circuit offers classes for various age groups, providing age-appropriate instruction. They focus on techniques, problem-solving, and strength. Your children will learn how to climb in a fun and engaging environment, and they will provide you with regular progress reports so you can stay informed about their progress. You can make reservations for weekends and non-school days, but you’ll need to apply to join the after-school club. For groups, please book at least two weeks in advance. They also offer summer and winter camps for your enjoyment, as well as birthday party options.

Parents have appreciated that the staff is engaging, and the progress reports have helped because they can see how their child is improving and offer encouragement.

Stoneworks Climbing Gym

Stoneworks are family-friendly and designed to give you a sense of community. Not only do they offer lessons, but they also have programs designed to engage your children. Additionally, they offer climbing teams for children and teenagers. Like other gyms, they have many summer camps for families. Lessons with instructors and classes are available, and you can also host birthday parties here. The cost will be $165 for ten climbers, plus an additional $80 non-refundable fee. You can bring in more climbers if needed, but an additional fee will be charged.

Source Climbing Center

Everyone is welcome here. When bringing your little ones, you can climb with a ten-day pass or membership, and you’ll have to sign an agreement for children under eighteen. There is also an orientation for first-time visitors. Each child under fourteen must always have an adult present and in supervision. It’s recommended to start at four years old and no younger, as bringing younger children into the facility is not considered safe. There are classes and camps available, and the center is also great for hosting parties. Single-session courses will run for $24 (without membership), and no prior experience is required. This benefits those who have yet to practice and may be slightly nervous about climbing.

Portland Rock Gym

Welcome to the community. This area is fantastic, unique, and a lot of fun! The idea behind the gym is to help people learn about climbing and have fun doing it. First-timers can have a first ascent experience and take classes to ensure their safety. They also offer day passes and rental gear. The youth programs offer climbing teams and an introductory club, catering to beginners and advanced climbers alike, from ages nine to seventeen.

Parties are an hour and a half long for up to twelve people. Be sure to check the site for available time slots and book in advance. For the indoor camps, review each option they offer and complete the application form accordingly. Remember that they are suitable for all ages. The break camps cost $127 a day for ages 9-14. The club is typically the first step for most people, and it involves a four-week commitment. It will offer six hours of instruction.

Movement Portland

Movement Portland rounds out Portland’s family climbing scene with a sprawling 30,000 sq ft gym that feels like a playground for all ages; after-school classes and camps start at age 5, blending climbing with games and crafts, while low bouldering walls, auto-belays, and adult sessions let parents climb alongside kids under clear supervision rules. Birthday parties, gear rentals, and day passes (~$25) make it easy to jump in, and parents love the safety-first staff and confidence-boosting progress.

Giving Your Child Strength

Rock climbing is a valuable skill for kids, offering them confidence and strength that can last a lifetime. It’s also an excellent way for them to make friends and feel a sense of accomplishment as they grow. The best part is that these gyms offer programs for adults, allowing you to learn alongside them. Have fun reaching new heights together!
