Families visiting the Kilchis River County Campground have a new way to explore the outdoors, thanks to a partnership between Tillamook County Parks and the national nonprofit Kids in Parks. The newly opened TRACK Trail—part of a network of more than 200 self-guided adventure trails nationwide—encourages children and their families to unplug from screens and connect with nature through interactive exploration.
The Kilchis River TRACK Trail, which officially opened on June 5, offers a kid-friendly pathway winding through old-growth forest and alongside the pristine Kilchis River. With activities available both on-site and through smartphone-based e-Adventures, the trail turns every hike into a discovery-packed adventure. Kids can also track their adventures online to earn prizes.
“TRACK Trails are all about making it easy and fun for families to spend time outdoors,” said Jason Urroz, director of the Kids in Parks program. “This partnership with Tillamook County Parks helps children connect with the natural beauty and resources that make this part of Oregon so special.”
Located at the end of Kilchis River Road, the campground sits in a lush, 1,110-acre river valley and offers a rich diversity of outdoor recreation opportunities—including fishing, kayaking, swimming, nature walks, and more. In addition to the TRACK Trail, amenities include 41 RV/tent sites, group day-use areas, a playground, a basketball hoop, restrooms, showers, and a seasonal boat launch.
“The TRACK Trail is a perfect fit for Kilchis River Campground,” said Brandi Pierson, Office Manager for Tillamook County Parks. “We’re excited to offer families a new reason to get out and explore this beautiful place. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s a great way to create lasting memories together in nature.”
The Kilchis River TRACK Trail is part of a growing national network now active in 15 states, Washington, D.C., and the Qualla Boundary. The program has demonstrated measurable success in increasing the frequency of kids’ outdoor activities, promoting physical activity, and fostering stronger connections to nature.
