In Portland, we love Pride month(s)! Did you know that our community celebrates Pride in both June and July? We do! You can find out why here

Pride teaches children the importance of diversity and acceptance, helping them understand and respect differences in identity, orientation, and expression. Celebrating Pride fosters empathy, encouraging children to support others and stand against discrimination and bullying. Pride events create a sense of community, allowing kids to connect with others who share similar values and experiences. Additionally, participating in Pride helps children learn about LGBTQ+ history and the ongoing struggle for rights, promoting awareness and advocacy.

One of the best places to start the celebration for Pride is at The Darcelle XV Showplace. This iconic drag venue in Portland remains a shining symbol of inclusivity and vibrant entertainment. Known for its colorful performances and welcoming atmosphere, Darcelle’s has become a beloved fixture in the local LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Ask any old school Portlander if they have been to Darcelle’s and the answer will probably be “yes.”

Darcelle was the stage name of the beloved founder, Walter Willard Cole, who died in 2023. Darcelle, who was renowned for holding the title of the oldest working drag queen in the United States, has left an indelible mark on the art form, on Portland, and on our hearts

Jeremey Corvus-Peck, a seasoned drag artist with over 30 years of experience and a close friend of Darcelle’s, bought Darcelle XV Showplace in February. Corvus-Peck embodies the spirit that Darcelle’s represents.

In addition to its drag shows, Darcelle’s hosts a variety of community events and fundraisers, supporting local charities and initiatives that uplift marginalized voices. From drag brunches to themed performances, the venue actively engages with the community, fostering connections and providing a platform for diverse talents.

One way that Darcelle XV Showplace gives back is by supporting youth. Corvus-Peck shares that once a year, Darcelle XV suspends its liquor license for one day to open its doors to children; all the liquor is put away, and they allow young audiences to experience the magic of drag in a safe and joyful environment. That day is Sunday, June 8th this year. Be sure to check out their website for more information.

Darcelle’s the person and the club has been a fixture in Portland. As Corvus-Peck and all of the staff at Darcelle XV Showplace look to the future, their commitment to inclusivity and artistic expression remains steadfast. With plans for new events and collaborations, the venue is set to continue its mission of celebrating individuality and love, ensuring that Darcelle’s legacy endures for generations to come.

A Darcelle Plaza is set to open in January 2026. On Portland’s city site, it states, “Located in the heart of downtown, Darcelle XV Plaza honors the late Portland luminary Walter Cole, who enlivened the city in the Darcelle XV Showplace (the longest-running drag cabaret on the West Coast).”

As we continue to celebrate Pride month(s) in Portland, the spirit of Darcelle and the community she fostered remains alive and vibrant. The Darcelle XV Showplace not only honors a rich legacy but also paves the way for future generations to express themselves in joy.

The kid-friendly event at Darcelle XV Showplace is an excellent way to kick off Pride. Check out the Portland Pride website to find out all the festivities around town. The Portland Pride Waterfront Festival will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with a suggested donation of $10. The highlight of the weekend will be the Portland Pride Parade on Sunday, July 20, 2025, which begins at 11 AM from the North Park Blocks and concludes at Naito Parkway, where the festival festivities will continue.

Ultimately, Pride encourages our community to express themselves freely and authentically, reinforcing the idea that everyone deserves to be their true selves. What a fantastic way for Portland to be Portland.
