Established in the late 1800s and named in honor of George Washington, Washington Park has evolved over the years, expanding its facilities and attractions to serve Portland’s growing population and its many visitors. Today, it stands as a vibrant hub for education and outdoor recreation. This is the place of play, weddings, celebrations, and more.
Oregon Zoo
Oregon Zoo is home to over 1,800 animals representing more than 230 species, and it emphasizes conservation and education. Visitors can explore diverse habitats, from the African savanna to the Arctic tundra, and enjoy seasonal events such as ZooLights during the winter months. And if that isn’t enough, we have a brand new baby elephant.
Portland Japanese Garden
Portland Japanese Garden is renowned as one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan. This tranquil oasis features meticulously designed landscapes, including the Strolling Pond Garden and the Tea Garden. The garden hosts cultural events, workshops, and art exhibitions year-round.
Hoyt Arboretum
Hoyt Arboretum is Portland’s “museum of living trees” and boasts over 2,300 species from around the world, spread along 12 miles of scenic trails. Trail maps are available, and the arboretum is managed in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation.
International Rose Test Garden
International Rose Test Garden is a paradise for flower lovers. This historic garden, established in 1917, features over 10,000 rose bushes. Blooming from May through October, it offers breathtaking views of Portland’s skyline and Mt. Hood.
World Forestry Center Discovery Museum
World Forestry Center Discovery Museum is an interactive museum that educates visitors of all ages about the importance of forests and sustainable forestry through engaging exhibits.
Rose Garden Children’s Playground
This accessible playground includes slides, swings, a sandpit, and restrooms. Adjacent to it, the Elephant House is available for picnic and event reservations through Portland Parks & Recreation.
Tennis Courts
Located next to the Rose Garden, these six courts are open on a first-come, first-served basis. Only tennis, handball, and pickleball are permitted.
Archery Range
In the forest, an outdoor archery range is open for drop-in use at no cost. Please bring your own equipment, as crossbows are not permitted. The range is managed by Portland Parks & Recreation, and free parking is available at the gravel lot next to the field.

Johanna is married with two kids, three dogs, three cats, one leopard gecko, several chickens, and a few fish. She has been in the Pacific Northwest since the dream was alive in the 90s but has Southern roots and hails from Arkansas. The family spends a lot of time at some sort of sporting event for the kids. Johanna likes to fast craft, garden, host parties, and bake. Johanna and her crew go hard traveling, DIY-ing, and are always up for a new adventure or challenge.
