One of the reasons I love arcades so much is because of the social aspect. In an arcade, you are surrounded by early electronic games, such as Pac-Man, and the newest video games that have just been released. There are also tangible incentives at most arcades where you can cash in your tickets or points for a prize. Historically, arcades have been used as social hubs in America. The Golden Age of Arcades lasted from about the late-1970s to the early 1980s. It was a time of rapid technological development that created games such as Galaxian and Asteroids. This kicked off a major boom for arcades and the creation of many more games. Even though we have technically left the Golden Age of Arcades, they are still just as, if not more fun, than ever before. Even in our ever-changing world, arcades still serve their communities as great places to hang out and play. Another important item to note is that arcades are everywhere in the Portland metropolitan area. Simply searching for arcades in the maps app on your phone will locate at least a few nearby.

There are many great arcades in the Portland suburbs that are worth checking out. In Wilsonville, there is Bullwinkle’s, a massive play center with a ton of fun activities. Right now, they are offering a great deal called Moonlight Madness Pass. For $25, this pass provides unlimited play to be used for the last two hours when they are open. In addition to a wide variety of arcade games, they also have many other activities to offer. One of their offerings is their bowling center with 16 lanes. Operating on a first-come, first-served basis, a one-lane rental is $50 per hour for up to 6 guests. Bullwinkle’s also offers $13 a round laser tag, a rope course called the Sky Trail for $10, and even an outdoor zipline for $10. Personally, my favorite attraction there is the mini-golf. For $15 per person for 18 rounds, they have a great blend of easy to difficult shots. Plus, the mini-golf course’s decorations and “houses” are some of the best I have ever seen.

Another awesome arcade with several locations is Big Al’s. The two locations closest to Portland are their Vancouver and Beaverton spots. There is much to do there, from arcade games to bowling. Big Al’s even has a sports bar for the adults. Playing at an arcade can work up an appetite, and Big Al’s has a large food menu because of this. From appetizers such as Mozzarella Bites to burgers and fries served on a brioche bun, there is something for everyone. They also have a kid’s menu with items including chicken strips and pizza. A new arcade in Tigard called Claw City is another one worth checking out. The concept for this place is simple: Claw machines. Claw machines everywhere. We all know that one person (I am one of them) who focuses on those tricky games. This arcade is built for those people. The prizes offered are also very cool, such as massive Pokémon stuffed animals and other toys. An arcade with the sole concept of catering to claw machines will make for a terrific outing.

Langer’s Entertainment is an outdoorsy, cabin-themed arcade located in Sherwood. In addition to their arcade section, they have activities such as bowling, a climbing rock wall, and laser tag. A really cool feature that Langer’s has is Timber Town, a multiple-story obstacle course and jungle gym for kids. Equipped with slides, plastic ball shooters, and rope swings, the $8 cost per kid is more than worth it. Langer’s also offers a Happy Hour Monday through Friday, where all arcade games and activities are half off. It is a deal that is hard to beat. Another incredible arcade devoted to pinball machines is called Next Level in Hillsboro. In 2021, 2022, and 2023, Next Level was voted the World’s Best Pinball Arcade. They certainly live up to their accolades, too. Next Level also hosts parties and events. Guests can rent a party room for 2 hours for $150, plus $22 per guest. There is also an option to rent out the entire arcade for $250 an hour, plus $22 per guest. But even if you do not need to host a party, it is still very much worth it to pop in and play some games. Arcades are a fun piece of American history, and it is very exciting to have this tradition carry on throughout the Portland suburbs.
