Unless you are independently wealthy, we all have been affected by inflation, especially when we are buying groceries. Keeping up with filling our snack door for the hungry kids that come through our kitchen is a job in and of itself, so the holidays coming have us wanting to make a plan of attack.

The Plan

Plan Your Menu

First, decide on the dishes you’ll prepare and make a detailed list of ingredients. Stick to the essentials and avoid extravagant or unnecessary items. Don’t know where to start? Here are some ideas to start your menu planning.

Plus, we have listed a traditional Thanksgiving menu just to help us conceptualize what we are talking about.

  • Roasted Turkey
  • Stuffing (Dressing)
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Gravy
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Rolls or Biscuits
  • Corn
  • Pecan Pie
  • Apple Pie
  • Pumpkin Pie

Share the Love

If you’re hosting a large gathering, maybe ask guests to bring a dish to share. This not only reduces your expenses but also makes the event more inclusive. Don’t you want Auntie Ashley’s famous gravy or Nana’s yummy pie? Get them involved! Or BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage): Instead of buying a variety of expensive drinks, ask guests to bring their own beverages. This could be fun to see what people share (as well as help you save money).

Make a Shopping List

Start making a list of what you are cooking and then break it all down into a shopping list.  This detailed shopping list based on your menu will help determine what you need. Stick to the list and avoid buying items on impulse.

Set a Budget

Determine how much you will spend on your Thanksgiving meal and stick to it. You will have a general idea by examining your shopping list. This budget will help guide your shopping decisions.

Take Inventory

Before you start shopping, look at what you have. Keep your pantry and fridge organized so you know what you have and what you need. This prevents you from buying duplicates.

Grocery Stores

  • Shop Early- Start shopping for non-perishable items well in advance. This allows you to take advantage of sales and discounts without feeling rushed. Fred Meyer, Winco, and New Seasons all have early advertisements for the holiday.
  • Compare Prices- Compare prices at different grocery stores in your area. You might find that one store offers better deals on certain items. Also, consider buying generic or store-brand products, which are often less expensive.
  • Use Coupons and Discounts- Look for coupons, discounts, and special offers in newspapers, online, and through store loyalty programs. There are also numerous grocery store apps that can help you find deals. Check out stores you may not typically frequent. For example, Grocery Outlet could be a great option for you and your family at a deep discount.
  • Buy in Bulk- If you have space to store items, consider buying in bulk. This can be especially beneficial for non-perishable goods, like canned vegetables or dried spices. This includes hitting up Costco, US Chef’s Store, or regular grocery store bulk items.

Shop Seasonal Produce

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are usually cheaper and fresher. Plan your menu around what’s in season. Go to our local farm stores. This is a great way to shop local and save money!

Cook It Yourself

Pre-made or pre-packaged foods are often more expensive than making dishes from scratch. Plus, homemade dishes usually taste better, are healthier, and are more satisfying. Here are some recipes to get you started. Check herehere, and here.

The Decor

Save money on decorations by making your own or using natural elements like leaves, gourds, and pinecones. Get those kids to work! Check out these ideas on what to make. Or just let your kids go wild…it is always so exciting to see what they can come up with.  Have them make the place cards, a banner, a list of the menu, etc.  Hand turkeys? Sure! You are making memories together.

We hope that this list has helped you start thinking about your holiday plans. Remember that Thanksgiving is about spending time with loved ones and giving thanks, not about extravagant spending. With careful planning and budgeting, you can enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving without breaking the bank.
