Nestled in the verdant hills of Washington County, Oregon, Hagg Lake has a rich and storied history that stretches back decades. Once a simple meandering stream, this now-expansive reservoir has become a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Have you been to Hagg Lake? It is the perfect place to go with your kids this summer. The lake area has three parks and over 2,500 acres of parkland, which is great for fishing, canoeing or kayaking, swimming, and exploring.
There is plenty of water-based fun. You will find motorized boats, canoes, kayaks, nonmotorized boats, and SUPs. The lake is a prime spot for fishing, with plenty of trout, bass, and other species swimming beneath the surface. Children delight in the thrill of reeling in their catches, learning valuable lessons about patience and perseverance. The lake provides a great place to cool down for those wanting to swim. Just a warning that parts of the lake could have sudden drop-offs, rocks and plants under the water, boats and fishing lines, and even other swimmers. Just so you know, personal floating devices (PFDs or life jackets) may be borrowed from one of the fourteen loaner station kiosks at six locations around the lake. Refer to this park map legend for specific locations. PFDs are available for day use and must be returned to the kiosks before the park closes for the night.
Beyond the lakefront, Hagg Lake also boasts an extensive network of hiking trails that wind through the surrounding forests and meadows. These trails offer children a chance to connect with nature, observing the diverse flora and fauna that call this region home. From spotting vibrant wildflowers to catching glimpses of deer, birds, and other wildlife, the hiking experience at Hagg Lake is an educational and rewarding one for young adventurers.
Reservations are available for numerous park amenities. Book one of the outdoor picnic pavilions for an intimate gathering or retreat at the lake. The origins of Hagg Lake can be traced back to the region’s growing population and the increasing demand for water resources, which prompted the construction of a dam on Scoggins Creek. Completed in 1975, the Scoggins Dam transformed the once-modest stream into a sizable lake, creating a crucial water storage facility for the surrounding communities. Hagg Lake began to take on a new role in the following years, transitioning from a purely utilitarian water source into a beloved recreational hub.
As a cherished destination for families in the Pacific Northwest, Hagg Lake continues to captivate and delight the region’s youngest visitors, providing them with a unique and unforgettable connection to the great outdoors. Hagg Lake is about a 45-minute drive from Portland. It is the perfect quick day trip!
