As temperatures rise in the Pacific Northwest, you may seek ways to escape the heat and enjoy the outdoors. Fortunately, the region offers plenty of opportunities to beat the heat and have fun.
Of course, you can go to a pool, splash pad, or even to the river when it is hot out, but we have some other ideas, too. What about doing something a little different when the weather becomes unbearable?
1. Go to the Forest
The Tillamook Forest Center is a great option to escape the heat and learn something new. Located about an hour’s drive west, the center sits within the Tillamook State Forest and provides access to miles of hiking trails, rivers, and waterfalls. Visitors can explore the interactive exhibits inside the center, which is a fun place to explore with kids. Or head outside to cool off by the Wilson River. The nearby Jones Creek Campground also offers camping and swimming holes to beat the summer heat.
2. Hop in a Cave
Another popular destination is the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the iconic Ape Cave. Located east of Portland near the town of Cougar, Washington, Ape Cave is the longest continuous lava tube in the continental United States, stretching over 2 miles underground. Timed reservations are required to visit during peak season, but the cave offers a refreshing respite from the summer sun. Just be sure to bring sturdy shoes, a flashlight, and a light jacket, as the cave maintains a cool 42 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.
3. Get on the Ice
For those looking to stay closer to the city, the Lloyd Center Ice Rink in Northeast Portland is a great option. Open year-round, the indoor rink provides a break from the heat and a chance to lace up some skates. This is a fun event for kids and adults alike.
4. Explore the Falls
The famous Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is another must-see destination. While the falls can get crowded in the summer, the cool mist and rushing waters offer a perfect place to relax and take in the natural beauty. And while Multnomah Falls is the most famous there are several falls in the are to cool off around.
5. Head to the Library
Our libraries are amazing all year long. In the summer, they have reading programs, crafts, events, activities, and more. It is a free way to get the kids engaged, and guess what? You can also enjoy their air conditioning. Check out Multnomah County Libraries or Washington County Libraries for detailed schedules and hours.
No matter where you decide to go, staying hydrated, wearing sun protection, and planning ahead are key to beating the heat this summer in the Pacific Northwest. With so many incredible natural wonders to explore, there’s no shortage of ways to keep cool and have fun. What do you like to do when it gets hot out?
