Remember when we were kids, and we would head to the roller rink? I sure do. Want to give your kids a taste of the roller rink life we lived? The places below are still rolling with a new generation!
When you think of Oaks Amusement Park, you usually think of rides, but the roller rink is the largest west of the Mississippi! They offer regular year-round skating options for kids of all ages. Make sure to get there when they are playing live pipe organ music, every Sunday and Thursday at 7 p.m. They also offer glow skate once a month and birthday shoutouts at specific times. They also offer learn-to-skate programs for all age brackets along with specialty classes.
Winterhawks Ice Skating Center
If ice is more your jam, then strap on some blades and hit the ice where the Portland Winterhawks have been training since 1965. Lessons in basic ice skating, figure skating, and hockey are offered at all levels at a reasonable price. From personal experience, the teachers are absolutely amazing with kids of all ages. They really know what they are doing here and offer open skate as well. They also have a junior hockey league, so if your skating pro wants to hit the ice with a team, this is the place to do it. Not far from Portland makes it an easy drive.
A little further out from Portland, you’ll find a great ice skating rink in Sherwood. They offer lessons in ice skating, figure skating, and hockey at all levels. As a note, this is a bit further south than Portland proper, but it is worth the drive. This place was almost forced to close during the pandemic, but fortunately, it survived. Open skate, classes, and hockey leagues are also offered for both children and adults, alongside specialized figure skating classes.
In Portland proper, inside the first floor of the mall, you’ll find the Lloyd Center Ice rink, which is not something you find in every mall these days. While the rink isn’t as massive as the above two arenas, they still offer plenty of classes for children and adults. Learn to skate, figure skating classes, and freestyle classes are all in the offerings, as well as broomball.
