It is no secret that Portland boasts some of the most beautiful and scenic landscapes around. Every season is accompanied by the magic of Mother Nature. As we lean into fall, we are graced with the bountiful colors adorning the hundreds of species of trees and shrubs. Our noses kissed with the sweet scent of wet pavement, damp dirt, and decaying leaves.
Here are some of our favorite spots to visit and embrace the most that Mother Nature has to offer
- Heron Heritage Park in John’s Landing: this beautiful trail is paved and plush with sites and sounds for the family to enjoy. Canadian Geese roam the grassy landscape and graze upon the perfectly manicured lawns. The squirrels and chipmunks dart across the paths as they store their food away for the winter. There are plenty of benches and outposts for families to rest their feet and look out across the Willamette River that jogs along the path. You’ll find no shortage of people and their pets, kids, and favorite modes of transportation (bikes, scooters, and the like). It is a great spot to experience the fullness of fall’s entrance to the Portland landscape.
- Irving Park in Northeast Portland: a park with everything; from trails to trees, playgrounds to tennis courts, there is something for everyone! We enjoy taking daughters here during the afternoon and watching them make leaf piles and slide down the many slides awaiting their slippery journey down to the bark dust. Irving Park is also located within walking distance of local shops, eateries, and quiet neighborhoods that offer additional opportunities for families to enjoy. Irving also offers large swaths of green fields for children and their dogs to run until they can’t run anymore.
- Chapman School located in NW Portland: those familiar with Portland know that Chapman School is a haven for families looking for a place for their kids to experience the wonders of nature. Every year, thousands of swifts make their home in the chimney of the old school building. For a few days a year, families gather on blankets and pack their favorite picnic snacks to observe the spectacle that takes place. If birds aren’t your cup of tea, Chapman also has high-quality playground equipment and green spaces ready to be used by the little ones.
