Hiking is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise, but keeping kids entertained on the trails can be tough. If you’re a caregiver trying to figure out how to keep kids entertained while hiking, we’ve got you covered. Here are four tips that will keep everyone happy and engaged while enjoying the great outdoors in and around Oregon.

Go on a Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt can keep kids entertained almost anywhere, including on trails. Make a list of things for your kids to find along the trail. Tailor the list for each child, such as including pictures to match for younger kids and specific items like a type of tree or an animal track for older kids. If you give kids the same list, you can make it a competition and see who can find all the items on the list first.

Bring a Camera

Another way to keep kids engaged during the hike is with a camera. Letting them take pictures on a camera while hiking helps them develop an eye for detail and feel independent as they’re choosing what to capture. Let them take cool shots of nature they see, such as an animal or a plant, and encourage them to experiment with their own interpretation of the scenery. You can use these photos in a scrapbook or a gallery wall later, so everyone can see the fun you had as a family.

Play Games

If the child in your care isn’t interested in scavenger hunts or cameras, you can play a game with them. Games like I Spy or 20 Questions that don’t involve any equipment are great ways to pass the time. You can also create an interactive story or a role-play where someone acts as a tour guide narrating the hike while others respond as stunned visitors.

Go Fish

If you’re hiking on a trail with lake access and fishing permission, bring fishing gear! Use it during a hiking break so everyone can have some chill time and engage in a fun, skilled activity. Different fishing rods have different applications, but we recommend a portable telescoping rod for easy storage while hiking. Teach kids how to cast a line with this easy rod and let them try to catch some fish. Fishing is a fun, low-key activity that can keep kids entertained and give everyone a chance to relax.

Keeping kids entertained while hiking requires some creativity, but it’s a fun challenge in the end. Whether you’re hiking locally in Oregon or crossing state borders for new experiences, you and your family can enjoy hiking together with these activities.
