According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than one million vehicles were stolen in 2022. Your car is one of your most valuable assets, and there are some simple steps to ensure you protect it. Below are some tips to help your teen driver keep your vehicle and belongings safe and prevent auto theft.
How To Prevent Car Theft
- Park in well-lit and secure areas
When parking your vehicle, choose well-lit and secure areas such as garages, parking lots with attendants, or areas covered by surveillance cameras. A visible and secure location can act as a deterrent for potential thieves.
- Always lock your vehicle
Always remember to lock your car, even if you are away for just a few minutes. Double-check that all windows are closed, and never leave your keys in the ignition, even when running a quick errand. Also, never leave your car running unattended.
- Install anti-theft devices
Consider installing security features such as car alarms, steering wheel locks, and immobilizers. These devices can deter thieves and make it more difficult for them to steal your vehicle.
Adding extra security to your vehicle may also save you money on your car insurance – did you know you may be eligible for a discount on your car insurance if you install an alarm or other anti-theft devices? Talk to your insurance agent to learn more.
- Hide your valuables
Keep valuable items like wallets, backpacks, laptops, and cell phones, out of sight or locked in the trunk. Visible valuables can attract thieves and could lead to a break-in.
- Use Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Etching:
Having your VIN etched onto your vehicle’s windows can make it less attractive to thieves. It also helps authorities identify and recover your car if it is stolen.
